Literally Last Minute Sewing

I found a super cute tutee for some quilted coasters over at Craft Snob and fell in love. I decided on some home dec fabric to really give it some stability. I love this fabric - I know a lot of it is Amy Butler, but not sure about all of it.

I decided to only use four fabrics instead of five

It's quilting time

Time to sew the backing on
Add some edge stitching and we're done!

Back
I want to make some for our house at some point! They were so much fun. I hope everyone had a very Merry Christmas!

Japanese X and + swap

I signed up for a swap on Flickr and I am so excited to get going on this block. I was a little unsure how it would look with 7 different fabrics in one block and then multiply that with X amount of blocks. But I have to say it really does look AMAZING! The scrappier the better.  The swap doesn't start until January 7th so there is still time to join in on the madness :) There is a great tutorial for this block on  Badskirt. This is a great scrap buster project, but I have some fabrics that are just screaming to be used here.

I'll post some more photos soon.
Got to get busy!!

New Look

I have just changed over to the new Dynamic View. I think it looks really nice and is easier to read. Please bear with me as there are a few things that have to be worked out. Let me know if you like the new look. Will be back to our regularly scheduled post soon!

Mini Skirt Bag

I am so thankful we have such a fantastic Local Quilt Shop the Cabbage Rose! They have a great selection of modern fabrics and the store is so wonderfully laid out. It so easy to spend hours there. On Saturday they had a little fashion show and they gave gift certificates to all who participated. Thanks again!! I had very big time constraints with all the holiday sewing I'm doing and so I needed to find an easy project to do. I found just the thing the Skirt Bag

Before

It's so funny I had a mini skirt that I had bought as part of a halloween costume a million years ago. I was never going to EVER wear this again and so I was throwing it out.
I should have taken more pictures, however we have had such cloudy/rainy days lately that all my pictures turn out a little sad.
After
A blurry picture of the inside.

It was a lot of fun turning that skirt into something completely different.

My very first QUILT!! It was tiny, but it was a Quilt!

This is a very picture happy post - You have been warned! :)
I had the pleasure of going to my very first Fort Worth Modern Quilt Guild meeting on Thursday. It was a lot of fun and I'm so excited to be apart of it.  We had to bring a mug rug for a secret swap, so I set out to find some help. I have never made a mug rug, shoot I have never even made a quilt! Started them yes, but I had yet to make them into actual quilts. This one is full of firsts! I found an awesome tutorial from Sew Fantastic for a scrappy color block mug rug. I love the use of color and thought it was very cheery.

I cut out all my little  pieces and put them in their places.
Now it was time for some serious sewing!
I like me some chain piecing.

Here are all my strips ready to be sewn together.

Now they are all sewn together and squared up.

Here goes the batting and backing.

Now it's time to get quilting. I have to tell you I was a little apprehensive to start quilting. I don't have a walking foot yet, so I was using my patchwork foot.  It was a "Make it work" moment, but I will have to invest in one soon. My lines came out pretty straight, so I was stoked!

So now that all that was done, it was time for binding. I had no idea how or even where to start, but I had to do something since I had to leave in 3 hours to go to the meeting. I found a wonderful tutorial for binding on Oh Fransson. This helped me tremendously and I was able to crank it out.

Time for some handy work.

All finished! YAY I actually did it! I made a quilt all by myself. It may be tiny, but I got a quilt under my belt.

Here is the cute mug rug I picked um stole!!
I always feel bad even though that's the game.
She ended up with a super cool mug rug in the end so I didn't feel so bad :) I hope you all are having a very Merry Christmas and can't wait to start the new year.

Making homemade ornaments

We were going to have a craft day and make homemade ornaments!!
2 hours at Joanns and $50 later we had all of our supplies.

I thought I had better try one out before the big day, thank goodness I did! This was not a craft for 5, 4, 3 and 2 year olds. I really don't know what I was thinking. So Thursday night I stayed up until almost 1:00 in the morning gluing tissue paper to Styrofoam balls.

Lady bug
Tiger
Finished!! And now time for drying and sleepy time.
It was kind of therapeutic, but the kids would have melted down like no other. Next time I really need to think about a craft that has to have multiple swap outs on Martha Stewart for small children. The kids had a lot of fun painting their boxes and creatures. So I think it was a success. Here is their finished masterpieces.

Lake had the Elephant and
Ian had the Lady Bug
I think this will be a fun family memory!
Are you making holiday ornaments this year?
If so I would love to see them!!

Modern Block of the Month

First I want to apologize for the dark pictures. It gets dark so early now. There are a lot of photos in this post so be warned :) I have been waiting for the new November block of the month and it finally got here! As you know over at Sew Mama Sew they have been doing the Modern Block of the Month. The whole month of November they did Handmade Holidays which was awesome! So we get two blocks in December - YAY!!! It was well worth the wait. This is going to be a super cool sampler quilt. There are several blocks that I'm going to use as a whole quilt, this is one of them.

All the pieces cut and laid out.
Ready to start some sewing.
On your mark, get set,  and we're off.
Chain piecing going on here.

Finished Block

I wonder what the next one will be, I can't wait!!
I hope you are all having a fantastic holiday season. We have been so busy, I have had a hard time finding the time to post. The Holidays always relaxing! :) Till next time
